Ambassador Barry Desker
Dean of S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS)
The Singapore Global Dialogue, held annually, to coincide with a prestigious sporting event - the Singapore F1 Grand Prix - brings together a distinguished group of key policymakers, business practitioners, professionals and public opinion leaders from around the world. Organised by the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), this is the first time that a global meeting of minds on strategic issues of international significance is initiated by a local think-tank.
This year's Singapore Global Dialogue coincides with the growth of the Asia-Pacific region as an even more dynamic player in world affairs. Shifts in the global distribution of wealth, and the continued expansion of the Asian economies, have pushed Asian countries to the forefront of international political and economic affairs.
The high level of participation at the Dialogue will provide a global perspective on strategic challenges and transnational issues that confront the world.
RSIS is privileged to host such an eminent assembly. RSIS is internationally renowned as a leading research and graduate teaching institution in the Asia-Pacific region. It has created this platform to examine current challenges to global stability and ponder solutions to strategic issues of pan-regional security and non-traditional security. Themes of the Dialogue cut across national, regional and global concerns.
Singapore, with its constantly changing landscape and evolving cosmopolitan identity, provides an easily accessible setting for this Dialogue in the heart of the Asia-Pacific region. To extend the global reach of this ground-breaking event, we offer this website to provide information on the Dialogue and answer other queries of participants and observers.
Welcome to the Singapore Global Dialogue.
The Singapore Global Dialogue - held annually before the Singapore F1 Grand Prix - brings
together a distinguished group of key policy practitioners, business leaders, professionals
and public opinion formers from around the world. Organised by the S. Rajaratnam School
of International Studies (RSIS), the Singapore Global Dialogue is a global meeting of minds
to discuss strategic issues of international significance; the first global dialogue initiated by a
Southeast Asian think-tank.
While the Asia Pacific region, stimulated by the continuing expansion of Asian economies,
races forward as a more active player in world affairs, the use of evolving new technologies
has brought about profound challenges to traditional governance and the contemporary world
order. The wide range of participation expected at the Dialogue will generate a broad spectrum
of perspectives on strategic challenges and transnational issues confronting the world.
RSIS is privileged to host such an eminent assembly. As a leading centre for research and
teaching, and as one of the key nodes in the global network of think tanks, RSIS has created
the Singapore Global Dialogue as a platform to examine current challenges to the global
order in an effort to find solutions to both the traditional and non-traditional security issues
that confront the Asia Pacific and the rest of the world. As was the case with the inaugural
conference held last year, the themes of the second Singapore Global Dialogue straddle
national, regional and global concerns.
It is my pleasure to invite you to Singapore to participate in this exciting Dialogue. A vibrant
hub situated on the cross roads of the dynamic Asia Pacific region, Singapore is a convenient
setting for this conference.
Welcome to the second Singapore Global Dialogue.
