Monday, April 7, 2014 - Newark, NJ – The Rev. Ronald Christian, the Rev. Ronald Slaughter, and other faith-based leaders unequivocally proclaimed their support for Shavar Jeffries for mayor of Newark.

"Spiritually, there is a reason for Shavar to run," said Rev. Ronald Slaughter. "He certainly has my support and that of many of my congregants."

With crime at an all-time high, unemployment still almost twice the country's average and weak neighborhood economic development, Jeffries joined many of the pastors, ministers and imams at interfaith meetings over the course of several weeks to discuss the resources and strategies needed to provide greater networks of congregational support for city residents.

Jeffries has noted that, as mayor, he plans to rely on the faith-based community to assist with the implementation of some aspects of his public safety, youth development and education plans.

The leaders represent congregations and mosques from throughout Newark.

Imam Mustafa El-Amin said, "After meeting with Mr. Jeffries several times, and with the understanding of my Islam faith and experience, my heart and mind tell me without a doubt that Shavar Jeffries is the best person to support as the next mayor of the great city of Newark."

"You have to have some conviction in who you support and I fully support Shavar's candidacy," said Pastor Carmelo Roman. "I have been through many seasons in this city. It is time to wake up."

"There is no greater cause than the future of this city," said Pastor Paul Valerius. "Together we will work with Shavar to save the lost souls of Newark. We may differ in the practice of our faith but we all worship one God."

"The support of these faith leaders is truly humbling," said Jeffries. "I know that we cannot do this alone. It will take all segments of our community to get our team to city hall. Fortunately, I have learned that there is absolutely nothing that we can't do together led by faith."
