Tuesday, February 25, 2014 - Newark, NJ – Today, four Democratic ward chairpersons endorsed former Assistant Attorney General Shavar Jeffries for mayor of Newark.
Fran Adubato (North Ward), Lee Fisher (South Ward), Angelo Federico (East Ward) and Andre L. Speight (Central Ward), all agree that Shavar has developed the best, most comprehensive plan to tackle public safety, grow small businesses, and improve Newarkers' quality of life.
Fran Adubato said: "I've always known that Shavar would someday be a leader in our city. I know that he has a vision for Newark to improve our schools, make our streets safer and bring jobs to our city by attracting economic development to every neighborhood. Shavar will be a mayor that will make us all proud."
Lee Fisher said: "Shavar Jeffries has demonstrated the ability and capacity to address the major issues currently facing our community; pubic safety, education and jobs. We are at a critical period in the history of our city where progress in developing human talent is essential to match the bricks and mortar that are well underway, yet need thoughtful and collaborative partnerships. Shavar will be responsive to all of the residents of Newark. Knowing the history of Newark and its many contributions, we need leadership that welcomes our new residents and embraces those of us and our families that came from the Carolina's, Georgia, Alabama, Virginia, Florida, Mississippi, and other parts of the country, and the world. We need Shavar at this time."
Angelo Federico said: "Shavar Jeffries is the best qualified candidate for mayor to lead the city of Newark. On the two most important issues in this election - crime and education - Shavar has the qualities and experience to make our lives as a community better. He is the only candidate running for mayor with a law enforcement background with his successful work as a former assistant attorney general. And, as the former president of the Newark Public Schools Advisory Board, Newark came the closest ever to regaining control of our school system. I am proud to stand with Shavar in his quest to be our next mayor."
Andre L. Speight said: "I enthusiastically endorse Shavar Jeffries for mayor. With this election, we have an opportunity to usher in a new era in municipal leadership in Newark. I am committed to doing everything I can to ensure that we realize victory. Together, we have a tremendous opportunity to adopt new approaches to address old problems that have lingered from one administration to the next. This is an historic period in our city and I am looking forward to working with Shavar and the rest of Team Jeffries to advance our city using smart and innovative ideas to improve Newark for every family."
As Democratic ward chairpersons, all four are long-standing leaders in their communities and bring organizational support, manpower and other resources.
Shavar Jeffries said: "I am humbled by the endorsement by these ward chairpersons. They bring ground troops and experience, and their involvement shows all those who are paying attention to this election that the people of Newark are sending a clear message. To borrow a quote from the late, great Fannie Lou Hamer, the good, hard working residents of Newark are 'sick and tired of being sick and tired' of rampant out of control crime, being held hostage in their own homes and want a better quality of life. Truly, we are greater together and these endorsements today indicate we are committed and all in for the fight to better our city. Newark is a city we all love, and embrace its wonderful diversity."
