TEAMSTERS JOINT COUNCIL 73 ENDORSES SHAVAR JEFFRIES FOR MAYOR

For Immediate Release

Joint Council represents 15 affiliated locals and more than 41,000 workers

Tuesday, April 15, 2014 - Newark, NJ – Teamsters Joint Council 73 endorsed Shavar Jeffries for mayor of Newark last Friday.

Teamsters Joint Council 73 represents 15 locals. 41,000 members are in the New Jersey and Metro area, with approximately 1,800 residing in Newark. Teamsters Joint Council 73 includes workers in the industrial, waste management, construction, hauling and food and beverage industries, as well as locomotive engineers.

“Shavar Jeffries has been a long time advocate for working families and the less fortunate residents of Newark,” said Al Rispoli, president of Teamsters Joint Council 73. “With many Newark residents struggling to put food on the table and the growing violence happening in Newark each day, it is time for change. As Assistant Attorney General, Shavar fought to make sure all workers were treated fairly. He has been a strong advocate to stop the needless violence that has been plaguing our members and residents of Newark.”

Joint Council 73 is committed to putting boots on the ground on Election Day. Some of the locals have already asked members to lend themselves for canvassing and phone banking with Team Jeffries.

“It is an honor to have the unanimous endorsement from the 15 locals that comprise the Joint Council 73,” said Jeffries. “These locals are doing the everyday hard work it takes to ensure that our working families have the resources they need and the opportunities we all hope for. I look forward to working with the Joint Council beyond this campaign.”
