Almost 300 years ago, in 1752, American scientist Benjamin Franklin conducted an experiment that led to our current understanding of electricity. Our world has never been the same since – particularly since this miraculous finding led to the modern-day use of electricity in the mid-1800s.

When it comes to the experts in electricity, look no further than an electrician.

What is an Electrician?

An electrician is truly the master when it comes to working with electrical components. Electricians practice a special kind of trade and have mastered working with electrical wiring, electric machines, and transmission lines. There are three functions that electricians primarily do when it comes to their work:

· Installation

· Maintenance

· Repairs

Installation

Electricians are responsible for installing electrical wiring, and transmission lines, and helping with the installation of products that require electricity like your air conditioning! It’s a bit easier for an electrician to install electrical wiring on new construction builds, as the wiring is completely exposed. However, they are able and willing to install wiring and electric appliances on older buildings as well – it’s just a bit trickier!

Maintenance

It’s important to have regular check-ups on electrical wiring, but you want to make sure you leave this to professional electricians. They have the tools and knowledge when it comes to maintenance of electrical wiring or appliances. In larger buildings, you’ll often see electricians come through every so often to ensure the building’s electrical systems are performing optimally. Regular maintenance is an important element when it comes to the work of an electrician.

Repair

We all know that dreaded feeling when a thunderstorm starts to roll in. You find yourself questioning if the power will go off, as is common during rough, summer storms. Fret not, though, you will find once the storm clears electricians are working tirelessly to get your electricity up and running again.

There is a host of electrical problems you have probably encountered when it comes to your home, office, or electric appliances. Perhaps your lights start to flicker, or your air conditioning starts making a humming sound. If you have an electrical wiring problem, you don’t want to mess with it! Electricians are the only ones who should be making any electrical repairs, as you could get seriously injured by doing so.

What are the Different Types of Electricians?

Electricians are highly skilled tradesmen, but there are differences when it comes to these professionals. There are five main types of electricians:

· Commercial Electricians

· Residential Electricians

· Industrial Electricians

· Emergency Electricians

· Appliance Electricians

Commercial Electricians

Commercial electricians are primarily responsible for taking care of install, maintenance, and repair when it comes to office buildings, hotels, and businesses. This type of electrician also usually maps out blueprints for new construction builds.

Residential Electricians

Residential electricians are the ones to call if you find yourself having electrical issues at home. These electricians help with lighting, switchboards, and general household electrical appliances.

Industrial Electricians

Industrial electricians are closely related to commercial electricians, but there is a major difference. Instead of working in businesses, they work with large power plants and industrial plants – as the name suggests. Like most electricians, industrial electricians take care of installation, maintenance, and any repairs needed.

Emergency Electricians

Emergency electricians are exactly as they sound – the experts when it comes to electrical problems that need to be addressed immediately. They are the ones to call if you notice a burning smell or a downed wire. They are the ER doctors of electricians! Emergency electricians can be credited with saving lives with their electrical expertise.

Appliance Electricians

Appliance electricians specialize in your electrical appliances. This electrician is the one to call if you have issues with your cooling units or other electric components in your house. Appliance electricians are also the ones who install your much-needed household appliances. Without this special type of electrician, we would have a lot of broken household appliances!

Is Being an Electrician Dangerous?

Yes and no. Most tradesmen’s jobs come with their risks, and electricians certainly have dangers they may encounter. However, they are put through rigorous training when it comes to the handling of electricity, and this helps prevent injuries. Additionally, there are often safety guidelines put in place when it comes to their work. Electricity can absolutely be dangerous, and that is why there are strict rules and regulations for electricians.

Electricians: The Rundown

A world without electricity would be one which we cannot even fathom, at this point. Therefore, it is paramount to have professionals who know how to work with this powerful force. Electricians keep the world moving and functioning optimally for us. There are many different types of electricians, but they are all incredibly important and have either direct or indirect impacts on our lives. So, the next time you see an electrician, be sure to thank them!
